The Freedom To Die

Today former New Jersey governor Chris Christie said, “Are there ways that we can…thread the middle here to allow that there are going to be deaths, and there are going to be deaths no matter what?” This same day it was announced that the Trump administration was winding down the coronavirus task force. Shrug. There’s simply nothing we can do, they seem to be telling us.

This is, sadly, utterly predictable.

Other countries don’t have the gun violence we do, but America has a vocal minority that declares the freedom to own assault weapons more important than life.

Other countries have figured out health care for all, but America has a vocal minority that declares free market medicine more important than life.

Other countries have figured out how to combat this virus, but once again America has a vocal minority declaring freedom to have haircuts more important than life.

It’s not that there’s no other way. It’s not that we don’t know how. We, as a nation, simply refuse to bring the hammer down on the minority of idiots. And they’ll just hand-wave the deaths and call themselves the heroes of the crisis, because they preserved their freedoms.

America’s most cherished freedom is apparently the freedom to die.
